Salurate
What is it about?
Salurate is a home-use self-sampling system which utilises colorimetric analysis to measure the concentration of salivary uric acid (SUA) in pregnant women's saliva from week 12 to childbirth. Using a sterile swab provided in the Salurate kit, you will collect saliva from under your tongue, apply it to a test cartridge, and then take a picture of the cartridge using this app. The app then uploads the image to a secure server for analysis. By analysing these images, we hope to predict the potential development of high blood pressure and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), up to 7 weeks earlier than the current methods.

Early detection of high-risk pregnancies will enable healthcare providers to start appropriate interventions promptly, reducing the occurrence and severity of HDP, and ultimately improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. If validated, this medical device will be able provide healthcare professional with relevant information for them to offer a more personalised and proactive prenatal care.
The study involves a multi-center observational study conducted over 18 months and will include 4000 pregnant women. The trial sites include St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Each participant will receive a home sampling kit for their entire pregnancy, and the Salurate app will provide instructions on how to take the test, take a photo of the test cartridge, and send the image to our server for analysis, along with additional support information. The data collected during the trial will not change the participants' care pathway, as the research team will only access the predictions at the end of the study.
