The Great Stupa at Sanchi is the oldest extant Buddhist sanctuary. It was commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus is a simple hemispherical brick structure. It is crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank which is intended to honour and shelter the relics. It has four carved gateways or toranas detailing the life and stories about Buddha.

When it was discovered in 1818 by General Taylor, Sanchi had been abandoned for 600 years. Excavations revealed the ruins of about 50 monuments becoming one of the most remarkable buddhist archaeological discoveries in India
