Screening Compass guides users through a simple three-step process to generate a personalized screening schedule

Screening Compass

by Paula Ramirez

What is it about?

Screening Compass guides users through a simple three-step process to generate a personalized screening schedule. The app starts by collecting basic user information such as Age, Weight, Height, Sex (Male, Female, or Other), Pregnancy status, Smoking history, Sexual activity status, and Diabetes status. This information is crucial in determining which screenings are relevant to the user. Once the user enters their details, they are prompted to log the last date they had specific screenings tailored to them according to the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines. For users who have never had a certain screening, a toggle labeled “Never” allows them to indicate this. If selected, the app assumes the test should be scheduled as soon as possible and marks it as "Get tested today" in the list of upcoming screenings. After the user has logged their past screenings (or indicated “Never”), Screening Compass calculates when their next medical screening is due. It does this using the ScreeningManager.swift file. This determines the recommended frequency for each screening (e.g., every 10 years for colorectal cancer). Swift's Calendar API is used to calculate the next due date. If a user’s next screening is overdue, the app displays “Get tested today!” in bold red text to indicate urgency. Otherwise, the app highlights the next recommended date in blue for easy reference.
