App Store Description

Shadow Cast is a simple but powerful app that intuitively displays the sun's position, & direction and length (multiplier) of the shadow of a vertical object based on your current location, time of day, and month of year.

For instance, according to the screenshot, if the multiplier is showing 0.29x, it means that for an object of 1m in height, the shadow being casted will be of length 0.29m and in the direction of bearing 207.7° (SW).

The yellow ring represents the proportion of sun duration used during the day, and the light blue represents the proportion of the 24hr day that has past.

Other useful information is displayed such as:
- the amount of sun duration (day light hours)
- the suns elevation from the horizon
- sunrise, sunset and solar noon
- users current longitude and latitude position

In addition, the app automatically displays times in local daylight savings time (if it is present for that timezone and period of the year).

Who would use this app? Below are some sample use cases:
- sustainable house designers would use the app to ensure correct site orientation to achieve passive solar designed homes. eg. Maximise north facing light in winter (in southern hemisphere).
- photographers would use to determine sunset and sunrise times and solar direction to ensure the best available light. Take consistent photos when shadows are of a particular length in the day.
- neighbours who are concerned about shadow casting impacts from nearby housing developments.
- owners of non-fixed solar panels who want to maximise solar efficiency by angling & rotating panels with the suns position throughout the day.
- gardeners who want to know the optimal place to plant to minimise shadow coverage from nearby objects like fences/walls.
