Have you ever been hiking and come across a funky looking mushroom? Snout is a tool that can help you figure out what kind of fungus you've chanced upon.
This app was built by a group of four graduate students looking to improve the mushroom identification experience while out hiking or foraging. Even when you're far away from a mobile data network, this app will let you identify the different fungi you come upon.
Mushroom identification can be complex, and this app takes those complexities into account. Typically when attempting to identify a mushroom, you need to know about different features it exhibits, where in the world it was found, and the ecology in which it grows. Snout uses artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to eliminate obvious mismatches, then allows you to review identifying questions and narrow your fungus down to a particular species.
Note: don't ever eat a mushroom unless you have 100% positive identification. This app is not designed to inform on edibility of any mushroom. If that is your objective, we encourage you to search online forums and groups for people who can help you identify what you've found. This app is instead focused on figuring out what it is you're looking at when you're out in the wilderness, and may even help you learn a thing or two about how to properly identify mushrooms.
This is a work in progress. Please let us know how we've done!
