What is it about?

Drug dosing in obesity is challenging, due to altered drug pharmacokinetics and limited clinical trials in the obese. Drug dosing using scalar adjustments based on ideal, lean and adjusted body weight is recommended. However, these formulas can be complex, time-consuming to apply, and risk introducing drug errors. The SOBA UK App is designed to help overcome these challenges.

Drug dosing using scalar adjustments based on ideal, lean and adjusted body weight is recommended. However, these formulas can be complex, time-consuming to apply, and risk introducing drug errors. The SOBA UK App is designed to help overcome these challenges.

The SOBA UK app contains a simple to use anaesthetic drug dose calculator and the SOBA single sheet guideline for anaesthesia in the obese patient. Dosing recommendations are based upon the Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA) expert consensus and thorough literature review.

The Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA) is affiliated with the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) and formed and opened to membership in 2008. Its membership consists of expert clinicians who specialise in anaesthesia for bariatric surgery and in obese patients. The Society runs educational meetings both Nationally and Internationally which are recognised and approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA).

In addition the society has produced and published National Guidelines including a widely adopted Single Sheet Guidance, several review articles and a textbook. The Society has active links with both with the RCoA and the AAGBI to help advise these organisations regarding Anaesthetic training/education.
