What is it about?

In order to read books, children need to be able to see the vowel-w teams as two letters working together to represent one sound. In this app, children learn all about the vowel-w digraphs "aw", "ow", and "ew", plus the letter combinations “wa” and “all.” Each letter team is introduced individually in a fun video followed by the opportunity to read and write words with that team. Then children choose the letter team that can represent each isolated sound followed by selecting the team that can spell the missing sound in words. These tasks develop both reading and spelling skills! The two sounds that can be spelled by “ow” (like in “own” and “owl”) are taught in two different lessons, as are the two sounds spelled by “ew” (like in “new” and “few”). A bonus lesson includes learning that when the schwa sound is the first syllable in a word (like in "about" and "along") it is spelled by the letter "a", and that the schwa is also spelled by "a" when it is the last sound in a word (like in "tuba" and "sofa"). You’ll be amazed at how quickly children's reading improves with this method!

This app is intended to be part of the flow of the Sounds Have Letter Teams series, so it also includes a review that consists of reading words with all the codes that have already been taught for each of the vowel sounds in this app. For example, after children have learned about "ow" as the sound /oe/ and practiced reading words with this code for /oe/, they get to read words from earlier apps that include codes for /oe/, like "road", "note", "go", "old", and "low".

We have 16 vowel sounds but only five vowel letters plus the letter "y". Most vowel sounds can be spelled in multiple ways including by vowel teams (digraphs). Reading failure (dyslexia) occurs when children are not able to figure out this complicated system that even most adults don’t fully understand, so they resort to ineffective strategies. Children don’t need to struggle and fail! The Sounds Have Letter Teams apps make this complicated system very clear, easy, and quick to learn.
