Tarbal digital platform is at the heart of the solution to Africa’s
inefficient food markets found in most developing nations around the
world today. Such inefficiency increases the price on the end
consumer while at the same time hurting the producer as there is no
commonplace for the two to meet.
The result of such inefficiency is families end up spending a larger
proportion of their income on food instead of on other important
expenditures such as education and healthcare.
Markets in the developing world are characterized by being
fragmented, mostly due to poor infrastructure connecting food
production areas with cities and towns where the food is consumed.
Transportation further burdens the farmers who often end up selling
their production to intermediaries that barely offer a breakeven price
for the produce. In urban areas where most of the demand is, most
families buy from small independent fruit and vegetable stands or
neighborhood stores that depend exclusively on intermediaries to
procure their fresh produce, usually at a much higher price than
originally bought from the farmer.
As a result of the current market structure, a family in the developing
world could spend as high as 50% of their disposable income on food
as compared to 8.6% in the US as of 2020.
Tarbal is building a digital platform that will create an efficient and fair
marketplace where the producer, consumers, and retailers can meet
and transact in a safe and secure way. Tarbal’s digital platform and
mobile application are backed by physical infrastructure such as cold
storage rooms, a delivery fleet (soon to be fully electric), trendy fresh
produce retail stands, farming advisory service, agricultural input
division.
Tarbal aims to help farmers and the community by offering fair prices
for high-quality nutritious food by aggregating demand and building
efficient supply chains
