TB – Suspension of Disbelief
In his multi-media work "Suspension of Disbelief", Tim Berresheim applies a variety of forms of expression ranging from traditional to state-of-the-art ones. In doing so, he delves into the question of what artistic production is in 2018 and how art is perceived and taken in by the beholder. The piece is a contribution to "Mixed Realities. Virtual and Real Worlds in Art", the latest group exhibition at Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (05 May – 26 August 2018).
The multi-piece installation is spread out over two rooms and deals not only with the artist's own working environment – a place which in light of the ubiquitous digitisation is subject to permanent change – but also with aspects governing the response of the beholder: He investigates the specific accord stipulated between those who produce art and those who perceive or look at it – an agreement which forms the sole basis upon which it is to possible to engage with artworks in the first place.
Berresheim refers back to what Samuel Taylor Coleridge called the "suspension of disbelief" in 1817 and ponders how the agreement between artists and their audience has changed in the face of the novelties explored in "Mixed Realities". The representatives of this special accord: banknotes – scattered across the four walls of the lower-level room, which Berresheim crafts according to a formally and iconographically dense all-over approach.
To disclose the image genesis at the root of the works, the artist has created a tailor-made augmented reality app: Together with a great deal of additional information, "TB – Suspension of Disbelief" reveals three-dimensional versions of elements featured in Berresheim's art and contains a soundtrack to accompany the eight station which make up his digital studio.
