What is it about?

The Douglastown Detour combines oral histories, music, sounds, and images to explore the memories and meaning of the places of Douglastown’s past. This GPS-based mobile smartphone app triggers stories about specific sites in Douglastown’s core, from the present-day community centre to the train bridge at the end of Douglastown beach. Funded by Canadian Heritage's Community Cultural Action Fund between 2016 and 2018, the project was embedded within a wider framework of community engagement: many community members participated in interviews, storytelling teas, project brainstorming sessions, and workshops on scanning photographs and interviewing family and friends. Production by Glenn Patterson and Kathy Kennedy. Graphics by Graham Blair.
