The Journey Of Mining

The Journey of Mining is a Mandela Mining Precinct initiative intended to showcase the history and growth of the mining and minerals sector in South Africa. Particular focus is placed on gold and platinum mining.

Learn about this vibrant sector, a true cornerstone of the South African economy. Journey through the early years of drilling, support, blasting, etc. What are the current mining practices, and given the possibilities offered by the fourth industrial revolution, what will the future of mining look like?

We hope that, through this journey, you gain an understanding of the centrality of mining to the development of South Africa, and the rest of the world. As technology continues to advance, mining techniques become even more accurate and efficient. In the future, revolutionary technologies may completely eliminate the need for hands-on involvement from miners entirely. Through the enabled miner, it may be possible to mine with zero harm, removing the miner from the face, and placing the miner instead behind a joystick, remotely controlling the process of mining.

With 40 interactive markers, we take a closer look at the role mining companies play in supporting its employees and communities. We also look at the mining supply chain from an equipment perspective and consider both the economic and environmental impacts of mining.
