Founded on the territory of Thrace with Turkey's Anatolian peninsula, there are 81 provinces. Provinces are the largest administrative division of Turkey. These eighty 81 provinces are divided into 973 districts. These districts contain neighborhoods and villages, which are the smallest administrative units. The administrative and executive duties in the provinces are carried out by the governors proposed by the interior minister and appointed by the president after the approval of the council of ministers.


The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and to changes in the administrative system was reformed after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923. In 1924, Ardahan, Artvin and Kars were built and the number of provinces, which was seventy-one, was increased to 74. After 2 years, Ardahan, Beyoğlu, Çatalca, Dersim, Ergani, Gelibolu, Genç, Kozan, Oltu, Muş, Siverek and Üsküdar provinces were transformed into districts. In 1927, Doğubayazıt was transformed into a district and attached to Ağrı. In 1929, Muş became a province again, Bitlis became a district. After 4 years, Aksaray, Cebelibereket, Hakkari and Şebinkarahisar became districts, the merger of Mersin and Silifke and the creation of a new province called İçel, and Artvin and Rize were merged and a new province called Çoruh was created. In 1936, Rize, Tunceli and Hakkari became provinces again. Dersim's name was changed to Tunceli in the same year; In 1939, the State of Hatay, Turkey Hatay connected to the name of the aldı.1953't, Usak province, it was decided that the district Kırşehir, 1954, Adiyaman, Nevsehir and won Sakarya province status. Artvin regained its provincial status in 1956, and Kırşehir's provincial status was restored in 1957. There has been no change in the number of provinces for 32 years after this year. Aksaray, Bayburt, Karaman and Kırıkkale in 1989; Batman and Şırnak in 1990; Bartın in 1991; Ardahan and Iğdır in 1992; Yalova, Karabük and Kilis in 1995; Osmaniye became a province in 1996. Thus, the number of provinces was completed to eighty. The number of provinces of the state took its present form when Düzce became a province in December 1999.
