DR. SUE EAKIN (1918-2009) discovered a dusty copy of Twelve Years a Slave in a plantation home near the old Edwin Epps property where Solomon Northup was enslaved, when she was 12 years old. It would determine her life's path. After decades of research, she produced the first authenticated edition of the book in 1968. In 2007, at age 88, she completed her final, definitive Enhanced Edition with over one hundred pages of additional information, never-before-published images and unique maps related to the story. Dr. Eakin was also a Louisiana Hall of Fame journalist and civil rights activist. The Trail Guide is based on her research.
