This app provide you with relevant information on 109 useful tree species for East Africa, included Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The tools permits you to identify the tree species, to know more about the ecology and habitat of the species, the services provided by the tree species to humans and the environment and last but not least the products obtained from the tree species.
For each species this app details:
• The Botanical name and the species family.
• The English name(s).
• The common names used in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
• The general characteristics of the tree species with the tree biophysical limits, slow or
fast grower, its capacity to sequester carbon and its climate change adaption capacity.
• A layman description for easy confirming the identity of trees.
• The services the tree species delivers to humans, like producing edible fruits, medicine,
bee fodder and much more and the services provided to the environment, like soil
conservation, riverbank stabilization, nitrogen fixing, ornamental, etc.
• The wood products and wood properties are described for each species, soft or hard
wood, used for timber, farm implements, firewood or charcoal, etc.
• Propagation protocols are described, and seed management included.
• Tree management, how to plant trees, where to plant trees, which soil types and soil
conditions have to be respected, and proposed planting distances.
• The distribution of the trees and where are this trees growing in Africa and in which
biotopes they are custom.
• A full botanical description is incorporated for the botanists.
