Starting Today, Mobile Ads Will Appear In Tumblr's iOS And Android Apps

April 22, 2013
Bad news, Tumblr users. From today, the free Tumblr app for iOS will start displaying ads in the application's mobile Dashboard. The change comes almost one year since Tumblr launched "sponsored posts" on desktop, and now, in a bid to reach profitability sometime in 2013, the service is sending advertisements into both its iOS and Android applications. As explained at the Tumblr Staff Blog:
It’s been almost a year since our first sponsored post appeared in Tumblr Radar. Since then, our fashion, entertainment, and brand partners have created some truly delightful blogs and racked up tens of millions notes on their posts. We’re incredibly proud of our partners’ creativity and have been constantly amazed by how well these creations can fit into our Dashboards. So today we’re bringing these posts over to our mobile apps. It works very simply: Every now and then you’ll see posts from our partners as you scroll through your mobile Dashboard.
In the application, such sponsored posts will be marked with an animated dollar sign, so keep your eyes peeled. If the ads haven't arrived yet, they'll most likely be joining you and your Tumblr pals very soon. Tumblr for iOS is still free to download, and is natively compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Will advertisements get in the way of your mobile Tumblr experience?
