Following reports earlier this week saying Apple is preparing an Amazon Echo competitor, VentureBeat is chiming in with new information.

Part of a new Apple TV?

Part of a new Apple TV?

Instead of a brand new device, the features could simply be added to a new generation of Apple TV. Here’s more from the report:

The company will build on its enhancements to the Apple TV announced last year, which brought the Siri virtual assistant to the set-top box. A new version of the Apple TV will solve problems with the existing box and remote control, a source familiar with the matter claims.

“They want Apple TV to be just the hub of everything,” the source told VentureBeat.

According to the site’s sources, Apple considered building a new speaker but instead dropped the idea. Apple seems to be looking to add a speaker and microphone to the Apple TV itself.

This new info is definitely adds an interesting twist. While building the new features into an Apple TV box does make some sense, mine is currently located deep inside of an entertainment center. Not exactly prime placement for good voice recognition.

At WWDC 2016, which will kick off in a few weeks in San Francisco, Apple is also apparently planning to introduce a Siri SDK so developers can add support for the virtual assistant to their apps.
