2004年宁夏博物馆新馆建设被列为自治区成立50周年大庆的献礼工程。2006年11月，在中央、国家及自治区党委、政府的重视和关怀下，宁夏博物馆新馆破土动工。总投资2.28亿元。经过两年半的艰苦努力，以其端庄的外形、先进的设施、完备的功能、新颖的展陈、优质的服务，于2008年8月28日正式免费为公众开放。
