The United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Principles for Older Persons” in 1991, encouraging governments to promote older adults’ independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment, and dignity (1). Geriatric mental health specialists are on the front lines of the mission to identify and address threats to these principles: ageism, healthcare disparities, barriers to care, neglect, and abuse. The Covid-19 pandemic brought the consequences of age-based discrimination to the forefront, causing us to reexamine these principles. As the population ages, our responsibility to advocate for the human rights of older adults is more significant than ever. Whether through individual focused interventions, or state and national policy changes, those of us in geriatric psychiatry have a unique opportunity to make a difference for our patients now and in the future. At the 2025 AAGP Annual Meeting, we look forward to learning together, inspiring one another, and reaffirming our shared commitment to protecting the human rights of older persons.
