What is it about?

The purpose of this app is to provide information about the use of leftover newborn screening dried bloodspots (DBS) in research to accompany a signed consent. Every state health department has different policies regarding the retention and use of these leftover DBS, this app provides the information individuals need to know in order to provide consent for use of their infant’s DBS in future research. The information contained in the app was tested in a randomized control trial in Michigan, with results indicating that the app significantly improved knowledge about the use of dried bloodspots in research and the related consent elements, and that participants were significantly more satisfied with the consent process compared to the standard consent process used in the state of Michigan. The app includes an optional 5-minute video, voiceover for all text, and a Spanish-language option. Links are provided to additional information at the end in case users still have questions.
