ALTERNATIVE MUSIC HISTORY:
Alternative music has had a long history from where it began to where it is today. The term “alternative” refers to the distinction from mainstream rock and generally follows the same composition:

- Rejection of commercialism in the mainstream culture
- “Guitar music first of all”- New York Times
- Lyrics tend to address topics of social concern (drug use, depression, suicide, environmentalism, etc.)

Many different subgenres of alt music have developed over the years. One of the earliest forms was Goth rock (and it’s subgenre, power pop), which developed out of late 70s British post punk, and is known for being for darkest and gloomiest form of underground rock.

Throughout the history of the genre, indie rock and alt rock were used interchangeably, but indie rock was actually focused primarily on the British movement. This new wave of music moved away from blues and rock and roll sounds and instead focused on creating pop music that incorporated the newer electronic sounds of the time. And as the music of the 80s began to take a more atmospheric sound, a style of alt known as Dream Pop became popular.

The 90s saw a turn in their sound with a rise in ska punk music, which was a mixture of underground British ska and punk acts, and the term modern rock is an umbrella term used to describe all the rock made from this point on.
