Asiya Shriners are a part of Shriners International, a premier fraternal organization for Freemasons established in 1872, now with nearly 200 temples (chapters) in seven countries and thousands of clubs around the world. For over 140 years, Shriners have been promoting fun, fostering fellowship, instilling leadership and serving mankind through their philanthropy, a network of children’s hospitals located in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a health care system consisting of 22 facilities dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Shriners Hospitals offer advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.
Asiya Temple, previously known as Islam Temple or, the “Mother Temple of the West,” was established in 1883 in San Francisco and is the oldest Shrine Temple in Northern California. The Temple has jurisdiction over Marin, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties. Its founding members were prominent leaders of the bar association, medical profession, and the financial and business worlds.
In 1994, Asiya Shriners moved into their new home at 1925 Elkhorn Court, San Mateo. For over 130 years, Asiya Shriners have been participating in numerous fundraising initiatives, community events, and holiday parades around Northern California, and even became the “father” of the East-West Shrine Game®, the longest running college football all-star game in the country, which benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children®.
