What is it about?

Sight reading is a skill that we learn simply by doing. This app is designed to give violinists and cellists opportunities to practice and improve at all levels: beginner (best for more advanced beginners), intermediate, advanced, and ultra advanced. Each instrument has carefully curated selections of pieces, most of which are sadly quite infrequently played, so that it’s less likely that you’ve seen them before, and more likely that they’re brand new to you, for true sight reading. Each level of each instrument contains 50 selections, some of which are solo pieces like études, and some of which are parts from chamber music or orchestral pieces. And some are full-length works, while some are excerpts. But they have one thing in common: they’re bundled together in one simple app to help you learn how to sight read. Depending on what level you choose, you might see some pieces that you think are a bit too hard for you. And that’s okay. I hope you don’t get discouraged, because in a way, stepping outside of your comfort zone is one of the points of this. Learning by doing, stimulating your mind, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for you to do.

Sight reading is a skill that we learn simply by doing. This app is designed to give violinists and cellists opportunities to practice and improve at all levels: beginner (best for more advanced beginners), intermediate, advanced, and ultra advanced. I hope you don’t get discouraged, because in a way, stepping outside of your comfort zone is one of the points of this. Learning by doing, stimulating your mind, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for you to do.

Besides randomly generating selections based upon your instrument and level, AtSight plays you two bars of the recommended starting tempo of each selection upon request.

Please note that this app will NOT work on iPhone or iPod Touch…it is ONLY available for iPad. Also, make sure your iPad isn't on silent mode, if you want to hear the tempi!

All pieces and excerpts included with AtSight are in the public domain worldwide, so you are free to look up any work you see and download the full piece online. With the purchase of AtSight, you are not purchasing the music, or the rights to it, as again, everything is in the public domain worldwide. You are buying the convenience of having them all curated, the randomizer, and tempo references.

I hope you find this app helpful to your sight reading skills, and I welcome any questions, comments, or concerns anytime. So enjoy…play around a bit and find your ideal level in the app, and have fun practicing your sight reading!

P.S. Viola and bass coming soon!
