With its contemporary design, Beirut Souks offers the convenience and comfort associated with commercial centers within an open air structure with shaded streets, dotted with pleasant open spaces. As a shopping center and a people’s place, Beirut Souks affords the trendiest mix of retail, leisure, and entertainment.
Maintaining openness to pedestrian traffic, the Souks are within walking distance of the city’s historic core, main hotels and the Waterfront District, and offer easy vehicular access, with ample parking space.
Beirut Souks derives the name of its streets as well as its identity, urban plan and materials, from the legacy of the old Souks. A walk around Beirut Souks charms the spirit and enriches the mind. No two streets reverberate the same feeling; each has its own appeal and attraction. This promenade architecturale provides a cultural voyage in time and space, as one sees and feels the historicity of the place incorporated in the contemporary design.
This is evident as one approaches the Souks on Weygand Street with the Mamluk period Zawiyat Ibn Arraq on the right. Visitors can stroll from the square and discover the Souks traditional names that run in transversal and longitudinal form. This impressive experience is enhanced by archeological sites that are integrated into the landscape, such as the sunken courtyard of the medieval wall and moat, the unearthed late Phoenico-Persian harbor side settlement, and the restored mosaics from Byzantine shops.
One can also linger on the various plazas or near Intabli Fountain; enjoy an event or activity, maybe a musical performance; meet and sample any of the concept restaurants and cafés in inviting settings; or come face to face with contemporary art. The orange ‘Visitor’ is, according to the Belgian artist Arne Quinze, an embodiment of people’s pursuit for uniqueness. On Bab Idriss Square, sculptures by Spanish Xavier Corbero represent Roman figures on the way to the Hippodrome.
Children and teens can enter the amazing CosmoCity universe and enjoy a variety of games and other entertainment. For the younger ones, Planet Discovery is a science museum that offers hands-on learning and entertainment opportunities through diverse exhibitions. For the eclectic visitor, Khan Al Joukh, located in the Jewelry Souk, is an alternative space in the guise of a 2-year residency program for young designers and craftsmen, including a fashion school with an atelier for tailors and a retail corner, and a number of textile and fashion designers.
At the northern corner stands Beirut Souks CinemaCity, which houses 14 movie theaters; eight small, four large and two VIP theaters with a private lounge, all equipped with the latest in acoustic engineering and high technical specification screens―9 of which are 3D enabled. The theaters are complemented by three concessions areas and a food court. Externally, the huge multiplex is adorned with LED lighting modules that generate colorful visuals, especially at holidays. In its interior design, it redefines the cinema experience by creating a sensory journey enlivened by color, moon lights, and video animations.
The splendor of Beirut Souks is not due to their great size and beautiful architecture alone, nor to their integrated shopping, leisure, and entertainment components. It is a result of all the diverse features that characterize and effectively animate the Souks, fill them with vibrancy and turn them into a favorite destination and part of everyday life.
