App Store Description

Cahokia Mounds is one of 20 World Heritage Sites in the United States. Located in Southern Illinois eight miles east of St. Louis, Cahokia is the largest prehistoric Indian site north of Mexico.

Experience Cahokia as it was 1000 years ago with three multimedia trail tours and an audio tour of the Interpretive Center. This app was designed to help visitors (and non-visitors) understand the context of what they are seeing, orient themselves within the expansive landmark, relate different mounds to one another and experience the ancient stories through visuals and soundtracks.

Here’s the perfect travel guide to take with you to the archaeological site as well as a way to “enjoy a virtual trip” through Ancient America in the comfort of your own home or school.  As you unlock the mysteries of the mounds, you’ll understand why continued research here is so important to all of us.

Archaeologists call the Native Americans who built the giant earthen mounds the Mississippians, and Cahokia was their crowning achievement. The population was approximately 10,000 - 20,000 in 1050 AD, with 120 mounds within six square miles at the time.

Produced for the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society with input from noted archaeologists and tribal leaders, the tours have received numerous awards including an esteemed MUSE Award from the American Association of Museums in 2009.

MUSE judges said…
"Strong visual style; exquisite use of unifying graphics, maps and especially 3D animation, to add a pervasive sense of another time with historical information and hypotheses to the present landscape."

"Very well organized with accurate spatial sense; breaks new ground in the difficult art of combining a traditional walking tour with a cutting edge audio/visual tour."

"Cahokia Mounds Site Tours" contains:

Four tours enhanced with:
- 13 two to three minute videos with artistic interpretations, photographs and animated reconstructions and artifacts
- 47 separate audio tracks
- Soundtrack with Native American flute music

Profits from the sale of this app will support the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society in its unique endeavors, including its mission to protect the site through its Land Acquisition Program.
