Chatster is available for iPad and iPhone devices. It has notification functionality, so you get alerted if you receive a new message. There is a limited but well chosen set of emojis available. The interface is quite easy to understand, your kids wont have any problems navigating through the application.
Parents can create accounts for themselves, and for their children (register here: http://www.chatster.nl). You can handle friend requests through the parent accounts only.
