Classroom Stats is the data collection app for the Classroom Stats framework

Classroom Stats

by David Taylor

What is it about?

Classroom Stats is the data collection app for the Classroom Stats framework. Students in statistics classes, rather than providing "boring" data such as height, age, and favorite number during class so that instructors have data sets to use, can use Classroom Stats to assign games for students to play upon which data is collected for class and instructor use. This version contains seven fully-functional mini-games (Arithmetic Quiz, Mastermind, Numeric Response, Set, Multiple Numeric Response, Multiple Choice, and Mixed Question Types)! Instructors could still use Numeric Question to collect "favorite number" and other data, but Arithmetic Quiz will collect data such as number of questions correct, which questions were correct (especially nice for doing statistics regarding question difficulty), and how long it took to answer each question.

Note that this app is a very light-weight app designed to facilitate the games. Specifics to each game, as well as room creation for the games, is done via the Classroom Stats website where instructors can choose the type of game and parameters (such as 5 or 6 colors for Mastermind and number of questions for the Arithmetic Quiz). Data analysis and download is done via that site as well (any potentially user-identifying information is stripped from the data before downloading or displaying).

Studies show that students are more engaged when they use data that is personally meaningful to them. Instructors see that students are already on their phones in class. Why not combine the two with fun, small, games to collect data?
