Introducing CommuteUoM, Powered by STAXY
As part of our commitment to sustainability, the University of Manchester in partnership with STAXY, has launched CommuteUoM, a new and innovative travel app designed to make affordable, sustainable travel easier for staff and students.
Encouraging Carpooling
To reduce single-occupancy car journeys, CommuteUoM makes it easier for students and staff to find and share journeys, cutting both costs and carbon emissions. Built-in safety features, such as live journey tracking, driver verification, and vehicle checks, ensure a secure and reliable experience.
Promoting Public Transport & Rail Travel
The app provides real-time bus, tram, and train schedules, helping users plan journeys efficiently. CommuteUOM also integrates a split-ticketing feature to help users find the best fare combinations for train travel, making sustainable transport even more affordable.
Supporting Active Travel
To encourage more people to walk, wheel, and cycle, CommuteUoM connects users with others traveling similar routes. Group journeys offer an added sense of safety, motivation, and social engagement—helping make active travel an easy and enjoyable choice.
Rewarding Sustainable Choices
Staxy also incentivises low-carbon travel choices through challenges, leaderboards, and rewards, making sustainability more engaging and accessible.
A Bigger Commitment to Sustainable Travel
CommuteUoM is just one of the many initiatives we’ve introduced as part of the University of Manchester Travel Plan, launched earlier this year. The plan aims to halve aviation emissions from business trips, reduce car commuting among staff and students, and transition our fleet to electric vehicles by 2030.
Beyond CommuteUoM, the University is working to make sustainable travel more accessible for its community, with continuing and expanding initiatives such as:
● Free and discounted public transport options for students and staff.
● Improved cycling infrastructure, including secure bike parking, shower facilities, repair workshops, and free cycling courses.
● Active travel events and community groups to support walking, wheeling, and running as alternative travel methods.
Through initiatives like CommuteUoM and investments in active and public transport, The University of Manchester is shaping a cleaner, greener transport network—making travel more sustainable, affordable, and accessible for both our community and the wider city.
