Compare and Contrast People

This app was developed to help teach learners to observe people; specifically other children. The app provides a list of what to look for and how to compare and contrast children.
Over 100 screens allow time for the list to become a behavior or practice employed naturally by the learner. It is also designed to engage both learner and instructor in reciprocal conversation regarding the children they observations.
The color photographs depict children in everyday activities, making it easier to take the app into the community for real life practice.
The activities are easily imitated so the learner and another may share the same experience for the hands- on learning experience.

The focus: to observe children; develop language skills relevant to discussing children; verbs
Compare and Contrast People (CCP) has 6 steps:
Step 1: Shapes – learn to compare and express simple attributes; practice using the app (9 screens)
Following the initial work with shapes, there are over 100 screens used to compare and contrast children (all color photographs) in the following order.
Step 2: Children
Step 3: Children-Action
Step 4: Children-Action-Object
Step 5: Children-Action-Object-Place
Step 6: Eyes – compare and contrast color

Cognitive development goals and objectives:

Learn to look for specific and unique facts to observe children
Develop concrete concepts (nouns, pronouns, verbs, objects, places, and sentence structure)
Use the process of sorting attributes to categorize similarities and differences in children, their actions, possessions and environment
Follow a linear procedure to apply learned skills in each new step
Draw inferences or conclusions based on the rules of observation taught in this app
Quick directions:
After comparing the two images, tap on the icons to sort your observations (same/different). The work is errorless and provides unlimited time to think and express observations. Assign language to the observations to express nouns and pronouns, verbs, object labels and places. Introduce gender observations from the beginning to help the learner identify markers such as clothing and hair style (pony tails, braids, length, bows, ribbons, etc. as being boy or girl things). Develop sentence structure as you express and model language for the learner. For detailed direction or additional help and ideas, visit http://www.sumnsub.com/
