What is it about?

This app is part of a survey experiment by the Cal Poly Department of Health Research. It walks users through a series of steps that involve scanning cereal box barcodes and interacting with either augmented reality or a simple rating system, depending on treatment assigned. First, the user scans a barcode, and the app collects nutrition info via an API call to FoodData Central. Next, the user is prompted to rate the food item, in some cases after interacting with augmented reality objects that will be displayed next to the product. The user must repeat this process for one more item, after which they will be asked to choose the object they are most likely to consume.

App Store Description

This app is part of a survey experiment by the Cal Poly Department of Health Research. It walks users through a series of steps that involve scanning cereal box barcodes and interacting with either augmented reality or a simple rating system, depending on treatment assigned. First, the user scans a barcode, and the app collects nutrition info via an API call to FoodData Central. Next, the user is prompted to rate the food item, in some cases after interacting with augmented reality objects that will be displayed next to the product. The user must repeat this process for one more item, after which they will be asked to choose the object they are most likely to consume.

The primary goal of the project is to test the effects of augmented reality on decision-making, and the purpose of the app is to make these trials possible for students to partake in remotely. The results of nutrition facts, user ratings for each item, user decision and Cal Poly username (username derived from inputted email) are stored in a Firebase database.
