The best way to meter sound levels
Decibel : dB sound level meter
Sound is a wonderful thing, but it can be harmful if it's too loud. While we used to need expensive meters to measure noise levels, our iPhones can do just as well with the right app.

Complete decibel information. Decibel Meter Pro tracks the noise level, showing a graph of increases and decreases.
Record volume levels. Record volume levels for future reference. The app even geotags your recordings.
Comprehensive spectrum analyzer. If you rotate your device, you get a complete spectrum analyzer that you can configure to report and record data however you need it.
What is it about?
Decibel Meter Pro is easy enough to use for simple tasks, but it's also feature-rich enough to take the place of expensive decibel meters. You can maintain a running measurement, watching sound levels fluctuate. The app keeps up with changes in volume, letting you know when a particular threshold is exceeded.
For those who...
- want to protect their hearing
- need to measure sound levels but don't want to purchase expensive equipment
Not for those who...
- already have an investment in a professional decibel meter
- don't care about sound levels
Why we love it
What's truly unique about Decibel Meter Pro is the spectrum analyzer. If you turn your iPhone into landscape mode, the spectrum analyzer expands to fill the screen and you get more options. You can change the graph, adjust how it records various sound levels, and get much more information about the sound levels. This is a free app, but it does have certain limitations. Some users in the past have complained about the pop-up ad to purchase the unlimited version came up too often, but I only saw the message once every 15 to 20 minutes. That's pretty reasonable for an app as fully-featured as this one is.
