Infinite digging. Dig Dog has two modes, including an infinite digging mode. This is the one you want to play if you just want to dig and relax, with minimal challenge.

Upgrade your dog

Upgrade your dog. You can find hidden shops as you dig. Make sure to have some gold coins though! These upgrades can be rather useful.

Challenging roguelike platformer. Dig Dog is a digging roguelike platformer where you are a dog looking for bones. I mean, who can resist a dog just wanting some bones?

Challenging roguelike platformer

What is it about?

Dig Dog features a super simple and classic 8-bit aesthetic that any old-school gamer will appreciate. If you've played the original Super Mario Bros. games, then this feels a lot like those in terms of graphics and typeface. The color scheme is basic and provides excellent contrast, as the earth is black and the backgrounds are bright and vivid hues. Enemies are also black, but with a splash of color, and blend in to the earth a bit, making it hard to see them all, but that just adds to the challenge. Obstacles like saw blades and walls are white or colored, so they stand out nicely in the black earth. Bones are white too, so they're easy to spot. Animations are smooth and fluid, with no lag or choppy frame rates on my iPhone 8 Plus. The chiptune soundtrack is fun to listen to, as well as the digging sound effect.

Many of my favorite games growing up were platformers. So when I started making games for iPhone, I was keen on building a proper platformer for the system. I think my first attempt, SHAARK!, turned out fun but also quite short.

Dig Dog is a much larger and richer experience. Each time you play, the levels are freshly generated. Of course the worlds get steadily harder, but as you dig more you’ll discover a variety of challenges and goals. Will you spend your coins on a helpful item at the shop in 1-3 or horde them in an attempt for a high score. Maybe you’ll try to unlock new Warp Bones or try and beat all 4 worlds without dying. Or maybe just chill out in Free Dig mode with some cathartic digging.

I love destructive environments. You can pretty much dig up a whole level if you want. (Although that can be quite dangerous.)

As you dig more, you may start to find some of the game’s hidden depths. For instance, if you fast stomp on an enemy you’ll create sparks that ripple to the left and right. These sparks are both useful and dangerous. It depends on when and how you use them.

I hope you enjoy Dig Dog. I think there’s a lot to uncover here!
