语言通俗优美、题材广泛、风格独特，有苍凉感慨的怀古之情，有激越悲壮的边塞之风，有哀婉典雅的闺怨情怀……本书收选了300首作品，比较全面地展示了元曲的风貌。
原本来自所谓的“蕃曲”、“胡乐”，首先在民间流传，被称为“街市小令”或“村坊小调”。随着元灭宋入主中原， 有严密的格律定式，每一曲牌的句式、字数、平仄等都有固定的格式要求。
为了把这种新的诗歌与剧曲即杂剧区分开来，人们名其为散曲。和诗词一样，散曲也是起源于民间，原是民间群众和艺人口唱的通俗小曲。由于多种原因，宋词发展到南宋末年，日益丧失了艺术生命力。入元以后，“俗谣俚曲”便大量涌现，而且进人了文人创作。
