Essential Communication Skills Inventory

The Essential Communication Skills Inventory is an assessment tool that allows speech clinicians, families, teachers and care providers to comprehensively examine and document an individual's functional communication skills. This tool will provide a baseline of performance in the areas of informal communication and quality of life indicators, including safety, leisure skills and independence.

It is designed to provide a map for developing skills that result in functional communication and/or lead to further exploration of augmented communication devices or methods. This tool is appropriate for chronological ages 2 through adulthood and is particularly helpful in targeting communication needs for those with a significant discrepancy between chronological age and demonstrated cognitive skills.
