The basis of the calculations is the so-called Elo rating which accurately reflects the strengths of the national teams - in contrast to the FIFA world ranking. The team strengths are automatically updated after each match.
Octopus Paul's Calculator is based on a sophisticated, established mathematical model which has been introduced in 1990 and continuously fine-tuned since then.
