In the late 19th century a psychologist name Hermann Ebbinghaus pioneered the experimental study of memory and is known for his discovery of 'the forgetting curve' and 'the spacing effect'. We can thank him for providing a method to retain information for far longer and with greater reliably.

Unless you repeatedly revisit information you have learned, you'll lose it (hence the forgetting curve). Effectively spacing out the times you revisit the information helps lock it in to your long-term memory.
