Syrian hamsters are the best known variety, but there are a lot of other types. There are Russian dwarf and Roborovski hamsters which are considerably smaller than the Syrian hamster. They eat fruit, seeds and vegetation, and they mostly come out at night. Their cheek pouches go all the way to their shoulders. They carry food in their pouches and take it back to their burrows where they can store it for later.
