Higham Ferrers Audio Tour

An audio tour providing a glimpse into the history, main sights and treasures of this medieval town. The tour commences in the Market Square with its 14th Century Market Cross and important town buildings, including the Town Hall. Moving to St Mary’s Churchyard you will hear of the church, which began construction in 1220, and its later additions, the Spire and West Porch. The Bede House and Grammar School, also known as the Chantry Chapel, sit within the churchyard and the tour has a dedicated section to both of these intriguing buildings. Leaving the churchyard you will continue to the site of the former Higham Castle, which was demolished and stone taken to build Kimbolton Castle; the Dovecote remains along with fishponds and a warren. The tour proceeds to Chichele College and Medieval style gardens founded by Archbishop Henry Chichele in 1422. The College consisting at the time of 8 Canons and 4 Clerks, including a Grammar Master and a Choir Master, and six Choristers. The notable historic buildings of Pear Tree Cottage and Ivy House mark your return to the Market Square.
