The Historic Christian Church of Phoenix began as a church plant in May of 2021. We affirm the teaching of the historic Christian church as it has come to expression in the creeds/confessions of the faith. These represent the work of the pastors and teachers addressing challenges to the faith after much discussion. The Westminster Confession of Faith gives expression to the work of the Reformation and is our doctrinal starting point.

Our goal is to know God and make Him known. We believe that through the work of discipling the nations to observe all that has been commanded the earth will be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

We believe that the challenges of our day require a greater articulation of the knowledge of God in all of his works, in the works of creation and providence. God is known through His works. This includes general revelation which reveals the eternal power and divine nature of God so that unbelief is without excuse. We call this the doxological focus: our chief end is to know the glory of God revealed in all of the works of God. We find this as the constant theme in Scripture and in the WCF (1.1, 2.2, 3.3, 4.1, 5.1, 6.1).

We worship God with the singing of psalm, prayer, and preaching for the Word. We have ministries including Sunday School for all ages and a Wednesday night study.

Statement of Faith
In the word of theologian Benjamin Warfield, we hold that the Westminster Confession of Faith is the crown jewel of the Reformation. Coming at the end of the Reformation, it systematizes the best of the previous reformed confessions. It also anticipates the challenges that would come after it in Modernity’s challenges about reason, science, and faith in its statements about the light of nature and the works of creation and providence. Together, the shorter catechism questions 1, 46, and 101 give us the summary of the doxological focus: our chief end is to glorify God by knowing Him in all that by which He makes Himself known, in all of His works of creation and providence.

Distinctives
Our distinctives flow from the doxological focus of knowing the glory of God revealed in His works. We are a psalm singing, post-millennial, reformed congregation that affirms the clarity of general revelation and the inexcusability of unbelief. We teach the biblical worldview of creation, fall, and redemption as summarized in Genesis 1-3.

Dr. Owen Anderson is our founding pastor. He is a professor of philosophy and religious studies and teaches philosophical theology at Phoenix Seminary. His published books include “Job: A Philosophical Commentary” and “The Declaration of Independence and God.” He is also the president of the General Revelation Institute which promotes the study of the revelation of the glory of God in all of His works. Favorite theological authors: Augustine, John Owen, John Bunyan, Charles Hodge, Benjamin B. Warfield, Martyn Llyod-Jones. His hobbies include running, hiking, and jiu jitsu.
