Hydra Score: Water Risk Mgmt

Hydra Score is a geographic information system (GIS) platform designed by California farmers and bankers to easily research ground and surface water availability and soil risk for agriculture in the wake of the landmark passage of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA).

Bankers: Use Hydra Score to quickly analyze risk and make a go/no-go decision as to whether additional diligence is needed. Easily bulk upload your entire portfolio, assess risk across collateral groups, download detailed reports, and much more.

Farmers: Use Hydra Score to quickly assess any parcel for its agricultural suitability. Compare your land with your neighbors, partners, and competitors. Ensure you are ready for the future implications of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA).

Real Estate: Whether you are on the buy or sell side, use Hydra Score to generate detailed water and land reports for your clients. Developers can quickly search for land that meets their criteria including identifying low-score acres ideal for land repurposing.

▶ HYDRA SCORE: THE CREDIT SCORE FOR WATER
Our proprietary 1-100 Hydra Score rating system is similar to a credit score for borrowers, the Hydra Score is a composite index of fourteen factors covering both water districts (surface water) and groundwater sustainability agencies (GSA’s).

GSA Factors:
The amount of overdraft per irrigated acre (for overdrafted sub basins only).
The sustainable yield of the underlying aquifer(s).
The water demand of the most productive crops in the region.
The components of the groundwater allocation program.
The amount of surface water available within the GSA.

Water District Factors:
Historical water rights.
Historic deliveries to the water agency (AF/AC and Total).
Whether the water agency moves water through, or takes water from, the Sacramento River Delta.
State Water Project (SWP) access.
Central Valley Water Project (CVP) access.
Natural surface water availability (Lakes, Rivers, Streams, etc.).
Transferability of water
Legal ability
Physical ability
Drainage issues
Access to storage

Hydra Scores fall within one of five ratings indicating the sustainable amount of water available on an average annual basis:
Excellent
Good
Average
Marginal
Poor

▶ SOIL SCORE: THE CREDIT SCORE FOR AGRICULTURAL LAND
Similar to the Hydra Score, the Soil Score is a simple and comprehensive means to evaluate the amount of management that a given piece of ground would require for productive agricultural activity.

Soil Scores fall into one of five ratings that describe the chemical, physical, and hydrological characteristics important for farming:
