Iaido Shumi-Ka

Iaido Shumi-Ka aims to teach about the Muso Shinden Ryu style of Iaido, and Seitei Kata set shared across schools. Gain and understanding of the names of common movements and the how they should be executed. Learn the judging points of the All United States Kendo Federation, and see the main points of each kata as well as breakdown of each movement. In the Omori Kata set includes a demonstration and a breakdown of each motion.

An Iaidoka typically practices the kata against an imaginary opponent, called teki, which translates to opponent. Iai is almost never practiced with a katana, instead an unsharp sword made for iai practice is used called an iaito, which translates to iai sword. However, it can be practiced with a wooden sword called a bukuto or bukken, or even with empty hands.

Modern iaido is heavily focused on etiquette, posture, balance, timing, rhythm and breathing among other things. The act of practicing the kata is indicative of the ritualist movements associated with zen practice. Katana techniques for self defence may be quite impractical in modern life, but when thought of in terms of zen the practicality becomes apparent. This is partially why iaido is said to be a character building activity. One may find it a good activity for mentally focusing, similar to yogo practice, than a more mundane activity.

Since sword duels are not a reality of modern life, iaijutsu has evolved into iaido; “do” meaning way or path and can be thought of as a way of living. In iaido, the "dō" refers to more than just drawing and cutting with a sword; it includes mastering mindfulness, intent, and spirit. In a dojo, the level of refinement is virtually infinite, and mastering the kata is an endless and unobtainable quest towards perfection. Very zen

While there are many dojo around the world teaching iaido as well as virtual internet options, this app offers a path to learn about iaido for one who is interested in the techniques and standards without a dojo environment. Or perhaps to preview what you will be learning in a dojo, or have a framework to evaluate the teaching and demonstrations of others. Hence the name “shumi ka’, which translates to ‘one who does a hobby’.
