We are proud to reaffirm that Ikeja Golf Club being an evergreen belt plays an applaudable role in the environmental balance of Ikeja. It fulfills the ecological responsibility of this district and has remained a major contributor to the greening feature of Ikeja since its inception over forty three (43) years ago. The Club also serves as an important tourist attraction for sport, entertainment and as a quintessential platform for Corporate Social Interaction in the heart of the capital of Lagos State, being proud of the ten (10) hole golf course situated over 10 hectares. Ikeja Golf Club was founded in 1968 by some prominent Nigerians and Expatriates amongst who were: Mr. A. O. Sandey then Commercial Manager, Nigerian Airways; Major Dickson, then Airport Commandant; Air Cdre Dan Suleiman, then Commanding Officer Nigeria Air Force Base, Pfizer, Bobby Benson and Felix Ibru. Others were Chief A. Sandey, Mrs. Alakijah, Dr Bailey, Duncan Blackwood, Chief Gilbert Olukoya, Chief Sunday Dankoro, John Brown (Pro), Albert Afun Ogidan, Captain John Obianyor and Baba Ahmed. It started as a 6-hole Golf Course and finally took shape in 1969 when the Matchplay Championship Trophy was donated by Bobby Benson. The competition inspired the founding members to explore the developmental prospects of that time by selflessly committing themselves to ensuring that they succeeded at evolving an enviable golf Club as we have it today. The 6 holes ran from the present Ladies Tee-box, that is, from the road by the Squash Court, to the first brown and then running down to the second brown. Two (2) holes were on the Nigerian Airways football pitch. At that time, only irons were used to Tee off and it was called the pitch and putt with a very small sized brown. These were managed until 1970 when the members decided to acquire the present day Golf Course under the stewardship of Mr. Sandey as the Chairman of the Implementation Subcommittee. Until 2003, the putting surfaces of the golf course were "Browns" but today all the putting surfaces of the course are Greens. The present day Golf Course ran as holes 3", 4", 6" and 7" then while hole 8" brown, used to be near the 17th hole of the present day course. The land was acquired and bulldozed by Mr. Duncan Blackwood (a member) and the holes were marked as no 1" and no 2" holes as at present holes 6", 7" respectively, and hole 9" in line with hole 3" tee-box.
