Seit Jahrhunderten bildet die Hilfe von Mensch zu Mensch das zentrale Motiv der Johanniter.
In Deutschland ist die Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. als Bundesverband in neun Landesverbänden organisiert. Der Regionalverband Östliches Ruhrgebiet ist einer von 16 Regionalverbänden in NRW.
Die Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. ist seit 1996 anerkannter freier Träger der Jugendhilfe.
