KIT is a person-centred visual communication tool for individuals on the autistic spectrum, care providers and families. It is designed to improve people’s lives by decreasing anxiety, promoting choice, structure and independence.
The following impairments are identified for people with autism:
• Communication - Verbal/audio communication can often be difficult or misunderstood.
KIT enables the individual to communicate with others by the use of personal visual imagery to select events, appointments and provide a visual structure of the day/ week.
• Social Interaction - Understanding body language and tone of voice can be difficult as well as experiencing discomfort in crowded or unfamiliar environments.
KIT promotes positive interaction, using established autism practices to help promote choice and independence.
• Imagination - People affected by ASD struggle with imagination skills and change.
KIT provides a regular structure and allows the users to concentrate on specific important areas of daily life. eg - favoured meals/activities. We have also developed a feature which will help the individual user to respond positively to a change of routine.
• Sensory differences - Many people with ASD have difficulty processing everyday sensory (sight, touch hear and smell) information.
The app provides a relaxing visual sensory section which helps to control episodes of high anxiety.
