In the current era of high accountability, there are a variety of tech tools to assess student learning, but few that actually ask students to self-assess their understanding of the material they’re learning. Learn with Me is a personal and efficient tool for student-centered formative assessment that empowers student voices and supports metacognition.

First, create a new learning target or select from a previously created one and then share the generated lesson code out to their students. Students input the lesson code into their version of the app and then have the opportunity to choose between four options ranging from emerging understanding to master understanding with descriptors of each to assess their learning. This encourages students to practice metacognitive skills as they authentically reflect on their learning and their mastery of the content material.

Once the student chooses an option, their results are transferred to the teacher’s app in realtime. The display shows the number of students self-reporting at each rating, and if the teacher selects the rating box, a list of students that selected that level appears.

At the touch of a screen, teachers can see who has mastered the material and can help others, who feels confident but would still like some more practice, and who needs a little more support. The teacher is the only person who can see this data, creating a safe space for students to share their assessment of their learning that might not otherwise be available.
