The suppression of human fat signal in Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been a challenge since the first day MRI was used in clinical practice

mDIXON Pocket Guide

by Bernhard Herzog

What is it about?

The suppression of human fat signal in Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been a challenge since the first day MRI was used in clinical practice. In the year 1984 the DIXON method was proposed, which - instead of trying to suppress the fat signal - separates water and fat signals prior to final image reconstruction. This approach resulted in excellent fat-free or fat-only images, however, due to the restricted echo times and relatively long scan times the method was not suited for widespread clinical adoption. Only in recent years new developments in MRI technology brought modified DIXON (mDIXON) methods, which are fast and flexible enough for use in routine clinical practice.
