App Store Description

Village guides are a unique new series of guides designed for the iPhone and iPad. They allow both the casual visitor and the long-time resident to have a fascinating insight into the past by telling the story of villages through text, audio and superb archive photographs.

Set in the North-East of England, they bring the region’s particular mix of industrial and medieval past to light in a way that traditional guidebooks cannot match. They also have very useful information for the visitor such as listing hotels and guest houses, where to park, or finding out the nearest cash-point. Plus you can also discover somewhere great to eat.

This village guide covers Morpeth, describing seventy fascinating buildings or places of interest to discover. It has over two hundred and seventy five photographs and illustrations, many of which are archive prints that are seldom seen and the story behind each site is available in seventy unique recordings to listen to and enjoy as you walk around and explore.

• Find out about medieval Morpeth, its origins and the buildings that still survive from
that time.
• Discover Morpeth’s own patron saint from Newminster Abbey.
• Learn the stories behind the Clocktower.
• Uncover Morpeth’s missing landmarks.
• Explore the Churchyard and hear what was done to fight grave-robbers.
• See from the air what is left from an old horse-racing course.
• Read about the old coaching inns and pubs in the town.
• Find out who built Telford’s Bridge (spoiler: it probably was not Thomas Telford).
• Identify where the feminist martyr, Emily Davison is buried.
• Go into the back lanes and discover Morpeth’s old industries and read about a
shocking Cholera epidemic.
• Discover how the second World War affected Morpeth with RAF Morpeth and the
Polish Refugee Camp just outside the town.

I hope that you enjoy it and that it encourages you to try out other village guides in the series, such as Pegswood, Bothal or Hepscott.
