Technology Developing People

The app My Special Routine is the newest tool to organize the daily routine of disabled children, children with syndromes, autism or other disabilities. A carefully designed app to stimulate development, integrating information in order to make activities with different challenges easier and more organized.
My Special Routine was created by an Occupational Therapist, Régis Nepomuceno. The app allows the integration of data under the principle that the activities of everyday life offer a range of learning and development possibilities. The more the child knows his or her routine, the more he or she becomes confident and independent, which is fundamental.

Concept
What is Routine?
The accomplishment of all essential activities in the life of a child, which are divided into Activities of Everyday Life (AEL) and Activities of Practical Life (APL). It is necessary to take into consideration the age of the child in order to assess how he or she can accomplish the tasks on his or her own and if help is required.

Features
Appealing for children.
Simple for adults.

An adult photographs the child’s routine, enter the “personal access” area in the app, which requires a password, and creates all the structure related to the weekly routine of the child.
The app looks like an organizer to arrange the routine, showing in advance tasks to be accomplished. It reminds you of each stage and, in the end, records everything that was finished.
The app has tools to add pictures and audio and can be entirely customized, so the child recognizes it, identifies the activities and follows the required steps for each activity, contributing to plan, organize (also in a sensorial manner) and understand the processes related to each activity.

Unexpected Event and Trips
Trips can be organized as a regular routine day, since you already know the destination, the route, the child’s activities and who he or she will meet.
“Unexpected Events” allows parents to anticipate unplanned events, something that may seem impossible, but that can become real if pictures are added to the picture file to anticipate to the child an occurrence that was not expected. For example, the arrival of a visitor: If in the file there is a picture of the person that is to come, the picture may be shown to the child, who can receive information before the visitor arrival. Therefore, the child will not be confounded by the event.

Hearing Aid
For children with visual impairment or who cannot read, all steps may be given by a voice recognizable by the child in order to make him or her understand the activity and its stages.

Printing
From the Tablet to the Paper
After the routine is created on the app, you can print the full schedule and create the picture wall. Organizing the routine with actual pictures is a tool already used to improve understanding.
On the app MY ROUTINE, all pictures will be automatically added to the defined routine, allowing the inclusion far in advance. In addition, unexpected events and trips may also be quickly organized without creating material that would be later deleted.

Who can use My Routine?
The app My Routine was created for children with cognitive impairment, both with motor or sensory disabilities. Due to the difficulty faced by these children when exploring all phases related to an activity, they are likely to lose cognitive potential and, therefore, will not understand how an activity is developed.
For example, when the child enjoys an ice cream, he or she does not understand the entire process that took place until it was given to him or her – the ice cream was simply given to the child.
The app will help children to understand the entire process of an activity cognitively stimulating them and improving the organization of their routine in a functional and meaningful way.
