Air pollution from vehicles is a major cause of early deaths and poor health in towns and cities but some cars are much cleaner than others (yes even some diesel are clean!). Cars are likely to be banned or charged to enter urban areas if they don’t get cleaner and dirty vehicles make the air feel dirty, unpleasant and unhealthy.

The app tells how much or how little NOx pollution cars produce compared to a petrol car.

The cleanest cars are zero emission which score 0x. A typical petrol car will score a fairly clean 1x but car with a petrol score of more than 1x are as dirty as that many petrol cars. So one car that has a 3x next to it produces as much NOx in the air as 3 petrol cars. The dirtiest cars produce as much pollution as 25 petrol cars so even choosing a cleaner diesel will make a big difference in reducing air pollution when you drive.

The app lets you find less polluting models based on independent real world tests. In some cases even choosing the same car with a different engine could massively improve air quality. Some small cars are very dirty and some big cars can be very clean so it’s only using extensive on the road tests that you can tell which ones are clean or dirty. Even some diesel hybrid cars can be dirty compared a clean standard diesel.

Our figures are based on real world tests on the road and forecasts by Emissions Analytics, a leading independent emissions testing company in Europe. These are published as part of the EQUA index which is also used for the Mayor of London’s vehicle checker. We take these emissions figures and convert them to our petrol score so they are easy to use, compare and understand in the app.
