Energy, Minerals and Natural Resource Department (EMNRD), Oil Conservation Division (OCD) Methane Map.
This Methane Map is intended to provide the general public with information related to the venting and flaring of natural gas in oil and gas operations around the State of New Mexico. Reporting by the industry is done using the C-115 Operator’s Monthly Report and due before the 15th day of the second month. The map will display the most recent available reporting but may reflect a two-month delay behind the current date.
Methane is a by-product of natural gas venting and flaring practices within the oil and gas industry. Gas venting is the discharge of unburned natural gas into the atmosphere, often carried out to maintain safe conditions during the different phases of the natural gas value chain. The term natural gas flaring indicates the combustion of natural gas (without energy recovery) from a tall stack equipped with burners used as a safety device at various points across the natural gas value chain.
