App Store Description

The Numeracy Map is as fundamental for numeracy as the alphabet is for literacy. The App is a digitalised version of the Numeracy Map, and, is particularly beneficial for visual learners. It is a highly visual and effective way of showing how addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fraction 'journeys' arrive at their answers. It is ideal for both school and home use.
---- What the App offers ---
Level 1 is free, and helps the user become good at the key numeracy skills for around years 2, 3 & 4 of primary school. It offers guidance, practice and assessment on addition and subtraction within 10, 20 and 100, the 2, 5 and 10 times tables (including division) and finding 1/2 of simple quantities, with an overall assessment of these key early stage primary skills.
Level 2 / Level 3 is a combined single in-app purchase.
Level 2 helps the user become good at the key numeracy skills for around years 4, 5 & 6 of primary school. It offers guidance, practice and assessment on addition and subtraction within 20 and 100 (harder examples than those offered in Level 1), the 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables, division with remainders, finding 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5, with an overall assessment of these key middle stage primary skills.
Level 3 helps the user become good at the key numeracy skills for around years 5, 6 & 7 of primary school. It offers guidance, practice and assessment of all the times tables, and, more complex versions of addition and subtraction within 100, division with remainders and finding 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5. It also includes fractions such as 2/3, 3/4, 2/5, with an overall assessment of these key upper stage primary stage skills.
A learner who attains competence with all the Level 3 skills will have good enough numeracy skills to more readily cope with their secondary school maths, since being good at numeracy = better at maths. The App will also support learners already at secondary school who'd benefit from improving their numeracy skills.
---- How the App works----
The App is carefully designed to assess and build skills for the beginner right up to the most advanced student. The App is compatible with smart board technology, thereby allowing the Numeracy Map to be used as an effective teaching tool by the teacher, for whole class teaching of key numeracy lessons.
For every chosen numeracy skill, , the App offers a:
VIEW MODE - where the user watches the Numeracy Map making journeys for the chosen numeracy skill arriving at answers;
PRACTICE MODE - where the user, having learned from the View mode, gives their answer and the Numeracy Map confirms it visually (more quickly than in the View mode). If the learner gives a wrong answer the map will show the correct journey and answer;
QUIZ MODE - where the user gives their answers to 10 questions on the chosen skill, and if they get 10/10 the App deems they know this particular skill well enough, thereby gaining a tick on their record sheet confirming competence on that skill. Their performance is also timed, so they can still improve on that particular skill by successfully completing the quiz a bit faster and becoming more fluent.
All scores are logged and you can gauge progress at glance on a detailed page showing all times and scores.
Tom Renwick (previously the Director of 'Maths on Track') researched alleviation strategies for dyscalculia (the numeracy equivalent of dyslexia), and found the mapping (or journey) techniques associated with the Numeracy Map to be the single most beneficial strategy for learners diagnosed as having dyscalculia.
The App can store multiple users, so it's ideal for teachers in the classroom.
This App is free to download and use at level 1, with optional in-app purchase offered for level 2 and level 3.
Numeracy Map App respects the privacy of its users and is committed to protecting the user's information. You can restrict in-app purchases by adjusting your device settings if you wish to.
